Calls to School
If at any time you need to contact a teacher, please call 942-2099
and leave a message with the office staff.  Staff members are not called out of class to make or receive phone calls.  Please be respectful of every child's learning environment and safe delivery home by making changes in transportation in writing to the teacher in the morning at not shortly before dismissal.

Communication
A school newsletter is published biweekly to keep parents informed of the general everyday occurrences here at Edison.  Classroom teachers also send home a variety of information with students at their discretion.   The school calendar and lunch menu are published monthly.

Conflict Management Program
Students take part in solving conflicts between other students.  Selected staff and students are trained to follow procedural steps to resolve minor conflicts before they get out of hand.  Students are selected as mediators based on their leadership, citizenship, and ability to work cooperatively with others.

Discipline
We believe that self-discipline is the best discipline.  For this reason, classroom and building rules are established.   A copy of the Willoughby-Eastlake Student Code of Conduct is available in the school office.  Occasionally some of our students will not behave in a manner that allows other students to learn or to play in a safe environment.  For this reason, we believe it is important for you to be informed of our Behavior Expectations Guidelines.

Dress Code

Students should wear appropriate clothing for an educational setting.  Parents should determine the manner of dress for their children with consideration to safety, health, and morality.  It is in the best interest of all students to have under clothing covered by outer clothing at all times.  Students may wear shorts to school, weather permitting.  Comfortable shoes with rubber soles are best for our environment.  Shoes with heels and leather soles are slippery on tile floors.  Because students will be going outside unless the weather is very inclement please have your student dress for the weather.

Early Dismissal
If a student must be excused during the school day, parents should send a note to school explaining the circumstances.   In the interest of safety, parents are asked to sign students out in the school office before they are released.  Parents are also required to show identification upon signing out a student.  Students will not be released to any person not authorized by the parent.  (Changes should be submitted to the office in writing.)   Students will be called to the office for dismissal upon the arrival of the parent.   Students  will not be called out of class for early dismissal before the parent/guardian actually arrives in the office with identification.

Entrance Procedures
Parents / guardians wishing to enter their child at McKinley  School must live within the school district and provide the following information:

Emergency Information
Each student must have an emergency form on file in the school office.  These forms are sent home prior to the beginning of school and are to be returned on the first day of classes.  Parents will be contacted following instructions on the emergency form if a student becomes ill or involved in an accident.  It is in the interest of the child for the parent to keep information current on the emergency forms.  Please call or send a note when any data changes.

Family Vacations

In the library/media center, sixteen computers allow for student instruction in technology during weekly fifty minute visits.

Student Progress

The progress of each student is monitored continuously.  Interim reports are sent home for those students experiencing difficulty during the middle of each grading period.  The school copy should be signed and return.  Report cards are sent home at the end of each nine week grading period. Parents should sign the report card envelope and return it to school.  Parents are asked to take time to review all assignments and tests that are sent home.  Reviewing this work on a regular basis will assist parents in monitoring their child's progress.

Transportation
Bus transportation is provided to Edison students residing in  Willoughby and Willoughby Hills whose residence is beyond one mile from the school building.  Questions concerning routes, times, and stops can be answered by calling the school office at 942-2099.

Vision Screening
Visual acuity (distance vision) testing is routinely administered to all Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students, and all newly enrolled students throughout the year.  As this testing is limited and primarily a screening device to pick up obvious defects, it cannot possibly spot all vision problems.  It is suggested that your child's vision be tested prior to his/her entering school, as part of the medical examination, to assure that his vision is normal.  Any defects that are identified by the school nurse are reported to the parents for further evaluation.  Where there are concerns, a vision referral form is sent home for the eye specialist to complete and return to the school for your child's health records.  No report is made if vision appears normal.   Students in kindergarten are screened for amblyopic (lazy eye) and eye muscle balance each year.   Boys in first grade will be screened for color vision.

Weather
In case of inclement weather, listen to local television and radio stations for news regarding the closing of school.  Public schools may only be closed by the decision of the district superintendent.  We make every effort to hold classes 180 days a year.  The decision to close schools during inclement weather is based primarily upon the ability for our buses to run their respective routes.   Every effort will continue to be made to announce the closing of schools the night before the day it would occur.  Realizing the varied nature of weather conditions between and among our communities, some parents may decide to keep their children home because of weather conditions in their neighborhoods.  Although these children will be counted as absent from school, they will not be penalized for being absent.

Withdrawal of Student
If you plan on moving to another school district, let us know as soon as possible.  This allows our staff to help the student make a smooth transition.  For moves within the school district, students may remain at Edison upon approval of parent request to the Director of Pupil Personnel and the parent provides transportation.
