Eastlake Public Library Summer Reading Program
Longfellow Elementary School is encouraging all students to read and practice math over the summer. Reading as a leisure activity is the best predictor of comprehension, vocabulary, and reading speed. Research tells us that without consistent practice over the summer, students will lose two or more months of grade level equivalency in math computation skills and reading achievement. This means, a student that is reading at a 2.9 reading level (2nd grade, 9th month) in the spring would slide back to a 2.7 (2nd grade, 7th month) or lower in the fall. On average, teachers spend between 4 and 6 weeks reteaching material students have forgotten over the summer.
