SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES
The school nurse is available on a part-time basis.  A health clerk is in the clinic the days the nurse is not at school.  The school nurse maintains health records for each child.  If your child has a special health problem, it is your responsibility to report it to the nurse.  This would include severe illness, accidents, hospital stays, allergies, and communicable diseases.  The school nurse may administer first aid, when necessary, but does not diagnose or treat illness.  The nurse can, however, assist in directing parents to the proper source of care in the community.  If your child has a sore throat, earache, severe cold, or is running a temperature, he/she should not be sent to school.

If your child is on medication, and the medication is to be dispensed in school, you must complete a form giving school personnel authorization to administer the medication.  These forms are available from the school nurse or on the W-E schools web site.   Changes in medication or dosage require a new statement from the doctor.

SECURITY BUZZER
The building doors are locked during school hours.  In order to gain entry, you must buzz the office with the security buzzer located at the main door.

SPECIAL SERVICES
The services of a reading specialist, family liaison, psychologist, speech/hearing therapist, intervention specialist, and gifted/talented teacher are available to students that qualify for these services.

A reading specialist works with students who have specific reading problems.  Eligible students receive small group instruction in their classroom or in the resource center.

An intervention specialist works with individual and small groups of students identified with a learning disability.  The LD student is intellectually capable, however he/she needs specific remedial instruction to facilitate learning.

The Gifted/Talented, (Zenith) teacher assists students who are able to learn at an advanced level in specific subject areas.  Students work on an enhanced curriculum that includes independent studies and higher level cognitive skill development.

Students may be referred to the school psychologist for identification of academic or social difficulties.  Referrals for service are usually handled by the classroom teacher, but parents may request a referral.  Placement in a special program does not occur without parent consent.

The speech/hearing therapist diagnoses speech and hearing difficulties.  Students receive individual or small group therapy in the areas of speech correction and language development.
