What is AR?
Accelerated Reader, or AR as it is commonly referred to as, is a reading software management program. Since 1986, many schools have used AR to motivate students to read and enjoy the reading process. The goal of AR is to help create lifelong readers and learners. For AR, a student selects and reads a book that falls within his/her ZPD range, which is the current reading instructional level the student is functioning at. Then, the student sits down at the computer and takes an Accelerated Reader Reading Practice Quiz. This short quiz quickly assesses the student's reading comprehension of the book that was read. Students are motivated to continue to read and improve their ZPD level range by earning points that accumulate throughout the school year. Accelerated Reader books may be found at the Washington School Library or your local community library. A list of quizzes available may be found at the Washington School Library.
