Kindergarten Registration Age Cutoff Date

Policy Change

The Board of Education approved a policy change regarding the cutoff date for a child to turn five in order to enter kindergarten at the December meeting.  The previous policy stated that a child must be five by September 30 of the year they are going to enroll in kindergarten.  The latest change moved the cutoff date from September 30 to August 1 effective for the 2017-2018 school year.  This does not affect students currently enrolled.  The following are some of the reasons for the date change:

  • ·         The start date for school has continued to move up over the years, but that cutoff date has remained the same.
  • ·         Students are four years old for up to six weeks in to their kindergarten year with the past policy.
  • ·         Many students who enter kindergarten before the age of five struggle in school both academically and socially.
