Third Grade Reading Guarantee

Under Ohio law, 3rd grade students need to demonstrate proficiency on a reading assessment in order to be promoted to 4th grade. The reading assessment can include the Ohio State Test of English Language Arts (OST) or an alternate assessment approved by the state. The alternate assessments Willoughby-Eastlake utilizes are MAP Growth and the Terra Nova. Our district administers the OST three times per year (fall, spring and summer) and the MAP Growth test in the spring.  The Terra Nova is administered in the summer. If a child demonstrates proficiency on one of these assessments, they will be promoted to 4th grade.

House Bill 33 includes several changes to the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.  For more information on these changes, click here.
