Summer Learning Camp
This summer Willoughby-Eastlake Schools will offer Summer Learning Camp (SLC) for students entering grades K-8. The SLC is designed for students needing academic intervention in reading and math based on performance data. The Summer Learning Camp will be offered Monday, June 26 through Friday, July 28, 2017. The camp will be at Willoughby Middle School and the hours are 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Registration information will be mailed to qualifying students in the beginning of May.
Third Grade Reading Guarantee
Under Ohio law, 3rd grade students need to demonstrate proficiency on a reading assessment in order to be promoted to 4th grade. The reading assessment can include the AIR test or an alternate assessment approved by the state. The alternate assessment Willoughby-Eastlake offers is MAP. Our district offers the AIR test three times per year (fall, spring and summer) and MAP testing three times per year (fall, winter, spring). If a child demonstrates proficiency on one of these assessments, s/he will be promoted to 4th grade. Current 3rd grade students not meeting the state criteria for Third Grade Reading Guarantee will be invited to Summer Learning Camp. These students will participate in intense reading instruction the first two weeks of camp and then have the opportunity to take the reading AIR test on July 11 and July 12, 2017. After the summer administration of the reading AIR assessment, these students will be able to participate in all of the Summer Learning Camp activities.

For the upcoming school year, parents have the option of purchasing school supplies from a store of their choice as they have in the past, or they may purchase a grade level school supply bundle through the district. The school supply lists are uniform for each grade level across the district and reflect significant price reductions from previous years.
Board of Education Fire
At 12:19 a.m. the Willoughby Fire Department received an alarm from the Board of Education located at 37047 Ridge Road and were immediately dispatched.   Upon arrival, the department found an active fire in the building and the building was engulfed in heavy smoke.

Kindergarten Revised Entrance Date Delayed

Kindergarten Revised Entrance Date Delayed Until 2018-2019 School Year

The district will delay implementation of the new August 1st entrance date for incoming kindergarten students until the 2018-2019 school year. For the 2017-2018 school year, students who turn five on or before September 30, 2017, may enroll in kindergarten. For the 2018-2019 school year and beyond, the new policy requiring students to turn five on or before August 1st for entrance to kindergarten will be in effect.

To set up an appointment to register your student, please call the school your child will attend.

For parents who have scheduled early entrance testing for students with a birthday before September 30th, this testing is no longer required for the upcoming school year and the appointments are cancelled.

If a child turns five after September 30, 2017, parents may still request early entrance testing for the 2017-2018 school year through Alison Ciferno at the Board of Education, 440-283-2227.

Please share this information with friends and colleagues who have incoming kindergarten age students.
