Kindergarten Registration Age Cutoff Date

Policy Change

The Board of Education approved a policy change regarding the cutoff date for a child to turn five in order to enter kindergarten at the December meeting. The previous policy stated that a child must be five by September 30 of the year they are going to enroll in kindergarten. The latest change moved the cutoff date from September 30 to August 1 effective for the 2017-2018 school year. This same change also affected preschool and first grade. This does not affect students currently enrolled. The following are some of the reasons for the date change:
Message from the Principal, Mrs. Aber

Longfellow will be embarking on a journey with One School One Book this winter. Our whole school will read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This program builds a community of readers through a shared reading experience at home, and it’s supported by exciting activities at school. It is kind of like a really big book club!

Every family received a copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , a reading calendar, and fun activities, too. We're posting the reading calendar and activities below as well. You will want to be sure that your child is all caught up so that he or she can participate in our trivia game and activities at school. Generally, you will be asked to read a couple of chapters a week and engage in a family activity afterwards. Altogether, it should take about 30-45 minutes a week.

Reading professionals recommend reading text aloud that is above a child's own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We selected a title that can be followed, understood, and enjoyed by all ages.

In the words of Willy Wonka, "In your wildest dreams you could not imagine that such things could happen to you! Just wait and see!" Happy Reading Mighty Mustangs!

Report Card Revisions
The report cards for grades K-5 have been revised to better reflect the standards taught at each grade level throughout the year. Report cards will be printed and sent home with your student at the end of the first grading period (after October 13, 2016). Beginning with the second quarter through the end of the year, report cards will no longer be printed as parents can view them through the Parent Portal of PowerSchool. To access the Parent Portal, please go to the green Parents Tab of the district website. You can then click on Parent Portal to login, or click on Parent Portal Help and Info for help setting up your account. If you need a printed copy because you do not have technology access, please contact your child’s teacher.
